Sannu! This is a blog that I have created for Brother Wilson's "The Developing World" class at BYU-Idaho. This blog is targeted at those who, like myself, know nothing about the country of Niger. I will be posting videos and thoughts here as I learn about the West African country, and hopefully those who are reading will learn something right along with me. Na gode! ~Rachel

Niger is the largest country in West Africa. Here you can see it on the map, as well as its flag. The upper orange band on the flag represents the northern regions of the Sahara Desert. The center white band represents purity and the Niger River. The Lower green band represents both hope and the fertile regions of southern Niger. The orange circle in the center represents the sun and independence.

These questions can be found on my C-MAP (connected to day 3) in the previous post, but I decided to put them here as well to make things easier. So here you have it! Five important questions and answers about the country of Niger.
1. Where did your country get its current name and list all the names you can find for that area.
*Officially the Republic of Niger
*Named after the Niger River
2.How is the name pronounced correctly?
*Niger: Ni-ger. Ni (rhymes with "tie") ger (as in "germ").
3.What is the name's meaning?
*Named after the Niger River, which is called Jeliba or Joliba, meaning "great river."
4. List the current development goals your country has for itself.
*Qualified for enhancd debt relief under the International Monetary Fund program for Highly Indebted Poor Countries (2000)
*Made an agreement with the International Monetary Fund on a Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (The Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility is an arm of the International Monetary Fund which lends to the world's poorest countries).
*Niger's new government (elections were held in 2011 following a military coup in 2010) has pursued economic restructuring by:
~Privatization of water distribution and telecommunications and the removal of price protections for petroleum products.
~Further privatizations of public enterprises are in the works.
~Taking actions to reduce corruption.
~Has devised a poverty Reduction Strategy Plan that focuses on improving health, primary education, rural infrastructure, and judicial restructuring.
5. List from your personal perspective what you think they should be.
*Quite honestly I think that Niger is headed in the right direction. They've only just recently set these goals, so it will be interesting to watch the country accomplish them.
